Frequently Asked Questions
Are there volunteer opportunities other than the concession stand?

Yes! The PTA has various events throughout the year, so keep an eye on our home page. The home page is where you will find information about upcoming events and links to sign up!

Why do we have a concession stand?
The concession stand is the most successful and profitable fundraising tool the PTA uses to support SMS.

Where do the profits go?
Profits from the concession are used to award classroom grants to teachers, purchase yearbooks for students, and provide other means of enrichment for students like yours! 90 minutes of your time, means teachers and students get more of what they need!

When should I arrive?
5 – 10 minutes prior to the start of your time slot.

How can I prepare for my shift?
Read through the FAQs and watch a short concession stand prep video here.

How much help will I have?
We typically have 2 adults, however, on busier nights we may have 1 – 2 additional adults to keep lines short.

Will there be someone in charge?
You are in charge of yourself and any minors with you, though there will always be a PTA board member on site while the concession stand is operating. Any concerns can be directed to them. See a list of our board members here.

Do I need to be a PTA member to volunteer?
No. Anyone is welcome to volunteer at the concession stand.

What will I be doing?
Preparing popcorn, nachos, and selling snack items. Prices are set at even dollar amounts or ending in $0.50 to reduce time spent making change.

This is my first time volunteering, how will I know where everything is and what needs preparation?
When you arrive for your first shift, locate one of our board members and they will show you where to find supplies, and how to prepare any items that need assembling.

Do I need prior food or money handling experience?
No food handling license is required. There will be cash transactions, so making change will be expected.

What if my shift is over and the next volunteer has not arrived?
There will always be a PTA board member on site. Please notify them and they will ensure there are no gaps in coverage.

What if I can’t work the entire shift?
If you are only able to work part of the shift, please let one of our PTA board members know ASAP. This will allow them time to make arrangements.
What if I have questions during my shift?
There will always be a PTA board member on site and available to answer any questions you may have.
Can I bring my student?
Yes, students may volunteer (this is a great way to earn NJHS & NHS volunteer hours). We ask that students do not handle the money. If you have questions about this, please see the board member on site.
Do I need to pull back long hair or wear closed toe shoes?
Please dress in whatever is comfortable for you.
